One of Louis Vuitton’s iconic models reinvented as a precious day-to-evening bag – the elegant Boite Chapeau Souple. This is the modern-day version of the famous Louis Vuitton hat box, because if there’s one thing this company is good at – besides making the most fabulous handbags in the world, of course – it’s sticking to tradition.
Louis Vuitton was founded back in the 19th century as a luggage company, starting with trunks and ending with hat boxes because the ladies of the era loved hats. Wearing a hat was a sign of elegance and class, just as wearing a Vuitton bag today marks you as a true fashionista.
Speaking of tradition, the signature Monogram canvas was invented back in the days when LV made luggage and was designed to fight counterfeiting.
The Hat Box Family
The firstborn in the hat box family was the Petite Boite Chapeau that was presented to the world in 2018. Basically, a miniature of the company’s original hat box. By definition, a hat box has to be hard to protect its precious cargo. The Petite Boite Chapeau was clam-like hard and as petite, or small, as the name said. It quickly rose in popularity as it is truly spectacular. To those who complained you couldn’t carry much in the new bag, the dedicated LV fans responded Who Cares? A Louis Vuitton bag is first and foremost a thing of beauty, you can wear it empty if you must!
The Flexible Hat Box
However, Louis Vuitton understood the concerns of the public and quickly launched the Boite Chapeau Souple, a flexible variant of the hard hat box created by Nicolas Ghesquière.
For one thing, the Souple model is larger than the earlier hat box, which is a blessing for the owners of such a bag. While the Petite Boite Chapeau barely allowed you to fit in an iPhone7, the flexible model is big enough to hold your most recent biggest phone, as well as your wallet, compact powder, lip-gloss, and car keys. It might not seem like much but it is indeed a lot as compared to the tiny petite version.
The Boite Chapeau Souple comes with double zippered closures that make it easy for you to reach inside. The interior of the bag is lined in light-colored microfiber, instead of the Petite’s lambskin lining, and it has an interior slip pocket where you can store your credit cards. Also, the bag has another slip pocket on the outside.
In a nod to LV tradition, the bag comes with a removable leather luggage tag.
Wear it as you want
One of the things that make the Boite Chapeau Souple so adorable is the innovative strap punctured with several holes so the length can be adjusted as you please. What makes it so special is the fact that instead of clipping on and off at the ends and adjusting with a buckle, this strap comes with buckles at both ends. When you want to make the strap shorter, to give your bag a more conventional look, the extra strap dangles like a minimalist tassel.
Of course, if you prefer you can carry your bag at hip length or even sling it cross-body, as the strap – with its maximum 48 cm drop – is long enough to allow it. That’s the beauty of a Louis Vuitton bag, it’s great for every occasion – from the formal business meeting to the casual stroll in the park.
What made the Boite Chapeau Souple instantly popular was the price. Compared to the original Petite Boite Chapeau, the supple model is only half the price, which makes it a better deal. You have the same chic round design, but a more spacious purse for half the money. Not bad at all!
When it first came out, the Boite Chapeau Souple was only available in classic Monogram canvas with cowhide trim and brushed gold-color hardware, but there have been two additions to the line. The black Empreinte Monogram leather is a very classy bag with the easily-recognizable embossed grained leather, but there is also a creme version, perfect for a spring or summer casual outfit. If you’re looking for something more eye-catching, the Boite Chapeau Souple is also available in a shiny Monogram Vernis leather, either red or black.
The Boite Chapeau Souple is the perfect choice if you’re looking for an iconic Louis Vuitton handbag. There are plenty of bags out there, but nothing says class like the true monogram canvas of a Louis Vuitton, and the round design makes this bag simply adorable. It’s bold and playful, but just as stylish as any other LV signature handbag.
